Honduras was battered by a Category 5 hurricane Tuesday morning.
Over 49,000 Hondurans have been displaced and face food shortages and water-borne diseases while they struggle to find shelter. Many of them will have no homes to return to once the flooding subsides.
14,000 people were unable to evacuate before the storm hit, due to their remote location and a fuel shortage. Those who remained are even more vulnerable to disease and injuries from dangerous floods and destructive mudslides. | |
La Moskitia, a jungle in Honduras and Nicaragua, was one of the most severely damaged areas. Over 2,300 Miskito Indians remain in shelters near their villages waiting for the flood water to recede. Many of these villages can now be reached only by canoe.
Imagine the despair that these stranded children and families must be feeling! World Emergency Relief is taking immediate action! |

World Emergency Relief (WER) responded within hours of Hurricane Felix striking Honduras. WER’s efforts are being locally coordinated with emergency relief teams and the Honduras Emergency Management Office.
Late Tuesday evening, WER joined relief efforts for 345 refugees at a shelter in Tegucigalpa. Each refugee is getting hot food, clothes and medical care. In addition, WER’s local staff is distributing antifungal lotions and scabies medicines in Tegucigalpa, Tegus, San Pedro, Ceiba and La Moskitia. WER is also purchasing local emergency supplies which WER’s Board member Gary Becks and local disaster teams will distribute.
|
WER expects to concentrate the majority of its relief efforts in the La Moskita jungle. WER’s Honduran staff has secured a military flight to transport food and emergency supplies as well as the team itself, who will distribute the supplies to hurricane victims in La Moskitia as soon as conditions allow.
WER’s Phase II emergency relief will include rushing two 40-foot containers of food, blankets, medical and emergency supplies to Honduras.
We need your support to continue our life-saving relief efforts in Honduras!
Please help WER aid these vulnerable hurricane victims!
