Tegucigalpa,
Honduras – World
Emergency Relief (WER) this week launched a pilot program
of three feeding centers in the villages of Comayagua,
San Juancito, and Comayaguela, giving up to 150 children
in each
center one hot, nutritious meal every morning prior
to going to school.
Under the direction of WER’s
local office in Tegucigalpa, school teachers, community
volunteers and interested mothers
from the local villages formed committees to help supervise
this program.
World Emergency Relief is supplying
the food and supplies needed for healthy, safe consumption
and enhancing nutrition,
which will enable the children to be more successful
in their school work and fight vitamin deficiencies associated
with hunger. Mothers of participating children will
rotate
cooking duties, with our WER local program office supervising
and evaluating this program. In addition, WER will
send volunteer medical teams to monitor the children’s
proper health, dental, visual and audio care. WER expects
to expand this program to seven additional Honduran
communities in 2007.
“The need is severe, and this program will help
provide hope for their future. The impact will be remarkable,
and we are proud to help”, says Dr. Claudio Casas,
WER’s Executive Director in Honduras.
World Emergency Relief is a global
family of six WER charities sharing a common vision and
core values, working together
with local and indigenous nonprofit organizations,
in the global fight against poverty and hunger, providing
relief
for those suffering from disaster, conflict and despair.
Our vision is “giving children a living chance”,
by addressing the practical, emotional, spiritual and
economic needs of children, their families and communities.
