CHINA
- World Emergency Relief (WER) is reaching out to survivors of China’s tragic earthquake. WER’s global offices rushed a shipment of antibiotics, hygiene packs, flashlights, clothing and other supplies into Chengdu for the survivors. WER is now preparing other shipments of supplies including 10,000 tents, medicine, milk powder, food, energy drinks and sturdy rubber-soled shoes.
“We believe that promoting survivors’ emotional healing can be as critical to their recovery as meeting their immediate survival needs,” says Joel MacCollam, WER’s CEO, “especially in traumatic, emotionally-wrenching situations like earthquakes.”
To meet the emotional needs of those in the disaster locations, WER ’s Hong Kong office is organizing crisis-counseling teams that will lead WER's second relief phase in mid-June. The crisis teams will work onsite directly with other psychological caregivers, and will provide medical rehabilitation and post trauma counseling to both survivors and relief workers.
World Emergency Relief has provided quality relief aid worldwide for the past 22 years, and now has seven international offices. In addition to disaster relief, WER works with local organizations to combat poverty, hunger, and abuse. WER's vision is to give children all over the world a living chance by addressing their practical, emotional, spiritual, social and economic needs, as well as the needs of their families and communities.
