LETTER TO EDITOR :
SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

SCMP ENCOURAGES POST-TSUNAMI PEDOPHILA ???

The naked young girl, pictured taking a shower with a bucket (p. A23. Saturday's edition), directly undercuts SCMP's otherwise keen warnings about the dangers of sexual exploitation confronting children in the tsunami disaster zone.

Our relief agency has consistently advised the public about the thousands of high risk children in this crisis, risks come not only from organized commericial or tourist sex rings but also "volunteers" who want to "rush to the disaster to help the children".

Since the day the tsunami hit, World Emergecny Relief in Hong Kong, and four other countries, has rejected over 1,000 offers of volunteerism, unless those offers have come from individuals known personally to us, or from professional groups sponsored by other reputable agencies or service groups.

Why turn away such a potential wealth of energy and compassion? Because we have no sure way of vetting such individuals for criminal records concerning pedophila and other forms of child molestation, whether emotional and phyiscal.

We hope SCMP will continue its emphasis on protecting children in the disaster zone (and everywhere else) against sexual expolitation, rather than publishing otherwise newsworthy pictures which could enflame a child molester to rush to Thailand or any other impacted country, to "help the children".
