Wednesday,
August 15, a record 8.0 earthquake
tore Peru apart, killing over 500 and leaving thousands homeless.
Hundreds are injured and countless
numbers are grieving. Dead bodies litter the streets amidst
the debris. Dust covers everything, contaminating the water.
Ruined roads make it difficult to transport emergency supplies,
leaving many people without food, water and medicine.
Aftershocks continue to cause more injuries and damage.
These victims need our help. We must act now!
World Emergency Relief (WER) is sending immediate aid to the earthquake survivors. WER’s relief team will arrive in Lima, Peru today to assess what is most needed and to help distribute food and medical supplies. The team will also help with other local relief efforts.

WER is sending 1,000 tents
that can each shelter 4-6 homeless earthquake victims.
In addition, WER will send an additional 40' relief container
of food, medicine, blankets and other emergency supplies next
week. WER desires to send later shipments of emergency
supplies. However, each of these containers cost WER
approximately $6,000 to ship. We need additional funding
to assist these desperate, grieving people.

The crisis continues!
Tragically, during major disasters, children are frequently sexually abused or kidnapped and sold into sexual exploitation. Even once the aftershocks cease, children may be potential victims.
WER intends to coordinate with Viva Network for in-country protection of vulnerable, displaced children. WER was one of the first global NGOs to address the important issue of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) during disasters. WER had a similar program during the December 2004 tsunami and is building on their past program success.
